Can't watch youtube for some reason? Well, here's a text and image version:

Start with a light color that isn't fully white, and is a tad dark. Dont use a rich or vibrant color for this. Now use the Pen tool on the fuzzy mode and go over where you'd like the shading to be on a layer above the base color.

Dont worry about going out of the lines; that can be fixed by clipping your layer.

Now, set the layer to multiply and clip it if you already haven't. Clipping the layer WILL keep the shading from going out of the lines if you have colored your base on a layer without white all around it.

Copy your shading layer and paste it.Then set it to clipping group, and use the blur tool and blur the edges of the shadows alot.

After that, you set it to multiply if you havent already.

Now, you should lower the ocupantacy of the shading layers to what you think looks best.

Add a new layer for the Shine, or, light. Use the brush tool to go over where you'd like for your shine to be.

You should set it to Luminosity or overlay, and lower the occupancy of the layer until it looks good.

*Lowered occupancy until its about 2%, with the layer set to Luminosity:

Finally, you copy and paste the shine/light layer and blur the new layer. Clip it, and set it to Luminosity/overlay.

Remember that you can always edit your shading or light layers whenever you feel necessary, since you may not feel satisfied at all with how it came out. This works especially well whenever your making a base for your adoptables. Its also a much easier and faster way to create cell-shading instead of selecting the color, making it darker, and applying it to the original layer, and it looks just as good, maybe even better sometimes. It also makes it toware you can edit the bases for your adoptables easier, so that there's always the same amount of shading each time you change the base color to make a new adoptable.

AND, YES;
The subject I was shading appears to be a ferret that I made.
